Portrait commissions are available in graphite, charcoal or oil paint. Portraits can be head and shoulder, 3/4 length, or full length. Drawings start at $50 and paintings start at $100. Contact artist for full price list and more information.

Art Lessons

Basya gives private art lessons weekday evenings in her home studio or in the homes of her students. She employs a traditional approach to learning art. Students build drawing skills with a focus on chiaroscuro (light and shadow) and perspective in the foundation lessons, then move on to color and painting. Contact artist for session availability.

My artwork is realistic and sensitive with an emphasis on emotion. I love to bring out the natural beauty in people and landscapes and tell or suggest a story. I fuse fine art with illustration by bringing a fine art look to children's picture books. I want my artwork to inspire and bring joy to children and adults, and through it make the world a better place.

Basya Cohen is the oldest in a family of eleven children, passionate about art, and interested in everything. Basya was born and raised in Metro-Detroit. After graduating high school she traveled to England to study art and design at the Manchester College of Art and Technology. There she earned a Distinction for her work. Basya completed her Bachelor of Arts in Humanities from Thomas Edison State College in 2009. She received her Master of Fine Arts in Illustration from the Academy of Art University (San Francisco, CA) in 2015. Basya's artwork was accepted to the Annual Spring Show at the Academy of Art in 2012 and 2013. She received the Spring Show School of Illustration award for Best in Category.

Basya currently gives private art lessons and works as a freelance illustrator and portrait artist. When she is not teaching or painting, Basya enjoys reading, running, taking photos, learning languages, and playing the piano.
